Charity Festivals in Leighton Buzzard

Oxjam Festival

Description

Oxjam is the name for the nationwide music festival in aid of the charity Oxfam. It's been running since 2006 and involves musicians and singers the length and breadth of the country (www.oxfam.org.uk/oxjam). The first Oxjam event in Leighton Buzzard was a ceilidh featuring the band Stomp in October 2007 at the Raven Theatre, Cedars Upper School. About 200 people enjoyed the dancing, plus music provided by four local bands, and over £850 was raised from the evening.

The second event in town was lasts year's Oxjam festival which ran from Friday 13th to Saturday 20th March 2009 (with a few stragglers in the following three weeks!). There was a total of 20 different events, involving 48 groups and approximately 500 individual musicians and singers. Approximately 2000 people attended the events, although it's possible that some may have been at more than one! The overall surplus raised for Oxfam was £3348, a fantastic figure for a festival which was essentially fun for everyone!

Plans are well underway for the Leighton Buzzard Oxjam festival 2010. If you would like to know more about it, would like to be involved in playing,  fancy organising an event, or feel that you can help out with time or sponsorship, then please contact Edmund Flach on Edmund.Flach@btopenworld.com.

The current programme is  available on the adjacent page. However, new events are being organised the whole time, so please check the site regularly .

The festival highlight promises to be the Oxjam gig with The Volume Brothers and The MusicMaker Academy staff band, plus headline band, Giles Hedley and the Aviators (www.gileshedley.com). Tickets are available now from the Leighton Buzzard Theatre: £10, or £5 for concessions.
