27th-28th November
PARK AND RIDE TO CHRISTMAS WEEKEND EVENT

For the first time, the “I Love Leighton Buzzard” Christmas Weekend, on 27th and 28th November, will feature a free park-and-ride facility, to combat traffic congestion.

Local enthusiasts will be operating preserved buses at regular intervals between the narrow-gauge railway station at Page’s Park, on Billington Road, and the Library. And the Town Council has moved all football matches away the station area, to provide more parking spaces if required. The first bus will leave from the Library at 10.20am, with the last departure from Page’s Park at 3.40pm on both days.

As an added attraction, the town’s unique light railway will be running special steam-train services between 10.40am and 3.00pm, the return trip taking 25 minutes. Ticket-holders will also be offered the rare treat of a free short ride in the driver’s cab.

Railway spokesman, Mervyn Leah, said: “We are delighted to be working with the town on this important event, and hope that people will use the free bus service to come and experience the railway, as well as going the other way to the town centre.”

After the Christmas Weekend event, Santa will take up residence in his Magic Tunnel at Page’s Park station, in time for his special steam train service to start on Saturday 4th December.

• The Leighton Buzzard Railway is nationally accredited by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, and has been operated and managed by volunteers, on a non-profit basis, since 1968. It was built in 1919 to serve the local sand quarrying industry, and has operated without a break ever since.

• Page’s Park station is on Billington Road, on the south side of Leighton Buzzard, near its roundabout junction with the A505/A4146 bypass, and can be found by following the brown steam-train signs from both directions. Bus service D1 runs half-hourly from the town centre and main-line station (not Sundays or Bank Holidays).
